It was jointly organised by Alzheimer’s Disease International, the Alzheimer’s Disease Chinese (ADC) branch of the China Association of Gerontology and Health Care, and Xi’an Jiaotong University. STEP participated by invitation.

Planning ahead to protect personal wishes and families
Mingyue Gao and Yue-En Chong TEP spoke as STEP representatives on preparing for loss of mental capacity and the legal tools available to protect individuals’ and families’ financial futures. The review identifies Chong as the then chair of STEP’s Mental Capacity Special Interest Group.
The discussion highlighted advance planning for a potential decline in decision-making capacity as an important part of estate and succession planning. The speakers introduced relevant frameworks in China and Singapore and discussed arrangements to respect personal wishes, safeguard family finances and protect vulnerable people.
Cross-border protection and legal coordination
The presentation also addressed STEP’s research into loss of mental capacity and its Global Representative Power initiative. Through guiding principles, the initiative seeks to promote robust and coordinated legal frameworks for protection, including where assets and family members span jurisdictions.
